Q: Do breast reconstruction tissue expanders cause pain as they expand?  It seems like a tissue expander would be painful as it stretches the skin.

A: Although there is normal post-operative pain after the initial placement of the tissue expander, the expansion process itself should be relatively pain free. The idea is to perform serial tissue expansion. If small amounts are added at regular intervals, the skin and muscle can stretch comfortably and without pain.
