A: Microsurgery is surgery performed with the aid of a microscope. Microsurgical techniques are used to operate on small blood vessels, and these techniques are a key component of certain breast reconstruction surgeries, including DIEP flap, TRAM flap, and other autologous reconstructions. When evaluating plastic surgeons for breast reconstruction, ask if they have experience with both microsurgical reconstruction and standard reconstructive techniques.
