Breast Reconstructions

Although technological advances have increased the number of breast-sparing procedures available, nearly one-third of breast cancer patients still require a mastectomy, or removal of one or both breasts. The ultimate goal of breast reconstruction surgery is to restore symmetry by creating breasts that strongly resemble the patient’s natural breasts.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery after Mastectomy

The most advanced breast reconstruction procedures require extensive microsurgical expertise. Throughout their combined experience of over 40 years in the field of plastic surgery, New York Drs. Vickery and  Keegan have always dedicated a substantial portion of their time to reconstructive surgery, and they are among the select few plastic surgeons who regularly perform the full spectrum of breast reconstruction. NYC Drs. Carlin Vickery and Leo Keegan have worked as a microsurgery team for 15 years, and they were the first male-female microsurgery team to work in tandem on breast reconstructions in New York City. Their team approach reduces the time and discomfort associated with surgery, and also ensures that safety is maximized. The doctors specialize in developing customized plastic surgery procedures that are appropriate for each patient’s body type, medical history, and personal preferences.

Breast Reconstruction Options

Patients face a wide array of options for breast reconstructions in NYC. Breast reconstruction surgeries fall into four broad categories:

Autologous (flap) Procedures

Autologous (flap) procedures utilize the patient’s own body tissue to reconstruct the breast area.   Read more

Implant-based Procedures

Implant-based reconstruction surgeries utilize saline or silicone gel implants to restore symmetry to the breast area after a mastectomy.   Read more

Hybrid Reconstructions

Hybrid breast reconstructions are individually customized surgeries that combine elements of autologous (flap) procedures with implants.   Read more

Revisionary (“re-do”) Reconstructions

For a variety of reasons, patients who have already undergone a breast reconstruction may become dissatisfied with the results over time. Drs.  Vickery  and Keegan offer individually customized "revisionary" reconstructions for patients who wish to correct or improve the results of their previous surgery. Read more

In many cases, a breast reconstruction can be completed at the time of the mastectomy. This approach combines the mastectomy and reconstruction into one procedure, eliminating the expense and discomfort of an additional surgery. A very minor surgery to reconstruct the nipple and areola may be necessary in the months following the mastectomy and breast reconstruction.

Comfort and Convenience

Breast reconstruction and mastectomy procedures take place at Mount Sinai Hospital. Lengths of hospital stays depend on the exact procedure chosen, but all patients have the option of staying in a luxurious wing of the hospital designed specifically for patients recovering from breast surgery. We are happy to arrange hotel accommodations for family members who may be visiting from outside of Manhattan, and we can also assist with transportation and other logistics.
