Hybrid Breast Reconstruction

Hybrid breast reconstructions are individually customized surgeries that combine elements of autologous (flap) procedures with implants. Most hybrid procedures use DIEP Flap or LD Flap techniques to harvest enough native tissue to rebuild the breast flap. A saline or silicone gel implant is then placed under the breast tissue to provide the necessary volume. Patients who require a specific shape to their implant may also choose to participate in the FDA study on 410 implants. As with all breast reconstruction procedures, the ultimate goal is to create breasts that are as symmetrical and natural as possible.

Top plastic surgeons in NYC Drs. Keegan and Vickery developed hybrid reconstruction techniques in response to their patients’ complex needs. They pioneered the team approach to breast reconstruction, and were the first male-female surgical team to work in tandem on reconstructive surgeries. Their extensive training and experience allow them to customize procedures based on each patient’s body type, preferences, medical history, and stage of life.

Hybrid breast reconstructions may be ideal for patients who:
  • need to replace radiated or compromised skin following a mastectomy, but do not have enough fat to completely reconstruct their breasts
  • have very lax abdominal skin, but need extra volume to achieve their desired results
  • prefer the softness of an autologous reconstruction, but need additional volume to achieve their ideal breast size
All hybrid reconstructions are initiated at the time of the mastectomy. In many cases, an entire hybrid breast reconstruction can be performed during the mastectomy. Some patients, however, will benefit from a staged procedure in which a tissue expander is inserted during the initial surgery. The tissue expander is then replaced with a permanent implant approximately 8-10 weeks later. The second surgery can generally be performed on an outpatient basis, and recovery time is minimal.
Breast reconstruction and mastectomy procedures take place at Mount Sinai Hospital, where patients may choose to stay on a luxurious floor designed specifically for patients recovering from breast reconstruction. NYC Doctors Keegan  and Vickery are always happy to assist with transportation, lodging, and other logistics for patients and families who may be visiting from outside of Manhattan.
